Tuesday 13 November saw experts from across the world
descend on the Burdekin to participate in STEM Stars Day, a day of Science,
Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) learning organised by Osborne State
School and hosted at Home Hill State High School. Students from Osborne State School, Millaroo
State School, Gumlu State School and Jarvisfield State School gathered at Home
Hill High to participate in a wide variety of STEM activities including making
their own spectroscope, learning about germs and the immune system, discovering
how increased physical activity affects your heart, and learning about our
Solar System and the Universe. The
students were joined by STEM experts Professor Glen Chilton, St Mary’s
University, Calgary; Dr Brad E Tucker and PhD student Adam, Australian National
University, Canberra; Dr Lauren Young, immunology expert, Home Hill High School
and Lauren Attard who is Home Hill High Schools ‘Girls in STEM Champion’. As well as participating in various
activities, the experts sat down for a panel discussion examining why each of
them had chosen careers in STEM. The answers varied but one theme was obvious
– STEM is FUN! We would like to
sincerely thank all of the experts for giving up their time to come and speak
